Electricity Market Competition in NSW

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in different states.

The next step, which occurred earlier in some states, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce a greater level of competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
    Distributors are responsible for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Every state has between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , the market in NSW was fully deregulated. This meant that, for the first time, consumers could change to another provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following distributors

  • Ausgrid
    The Ausgrid network supplies electricity throughout northern, eastern and inner metropolitan Sydney and in the Hunter region and Newcastle.
  • Endeavour Energy
    The Endeavour Energy network provides electricity to 2.4 million people in homes and businesses located in the Blue Mountains, Sydney's Greater West and the Southern Highlands.
  • Essential Energy
    Essential Energy supplies electricity regional and country NSW, and in southern regional QLD.

Tips to reduce energy usage to save on your bills

Here are some easily implemented ways for reducing household expenditure on energy

  • Dress for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (booties, beanie, warm socks, jumper).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Don't use your clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn all appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air entering or escaping via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows during the night to let the cooler air in, then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so you only heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise lighting through the use of as much natural light as possible.

It's okay to change your mind because your new energy provider provides you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and go back to your old energy provider.
No. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply the energy to your premises if you change over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from a distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be confident that you won't experience an interruption to your energy supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover won't take place until after your present provider has sent you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will also inform the current provider that you're moving to another provider. The change in providers will not happen immediately, though, because the current provider has to read your meter again, one final time. then send you their final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor that supplies the energy to your house continues to be the same as before the switch.
