Electricity Market Competition in SA

The Australian electricity market has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in another state.

The next step, which happened earlier in some states, was the dividing up of state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce greater competition the market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors look after the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. States have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2013 , the electricity market in South Australia was fully deregulated. This meant that customers could, for the first time, switch to another provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in SA is supplied by one main distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity throughout South Australia
  • Note, some remote electricity distribution systems are provided by companies other than SA Power Networks.

Tips for reducing your electricity consumption to save money

Here are a few easily implemented ways to reduce your electricity consumption

  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (booties, jumper, warm socks, beanie).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air entering or escaping through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Reduce use of your clothes dryer. Instead, hang the clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening windows at night to let the cooler air in, and then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Close the doors of rooms that you aren't using, so that you only heat or cool a smaller area.

FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that want to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new gas and electricity provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the gas and electricity to your premises when you switch over to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy gas and electricity directly from your distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be confident that there won't be any interruption to your gas and electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. But the actual switchover won't happen until your present provider has issued you their final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we also inform your present provider that you are leaving them. The actual move over to your new provider won't happen straight away, because your current provider has to read your meter one final time. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your home will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will receive a commission from your new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
