Electricity Market Deregulation in NSW

The Australian electricity market has been gradually deregulating ever since the late 1990s. The first stage was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in different states.

Another stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of the state owned monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to produce more competition the energy market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
    The distributors are responsible for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Every state has between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , NSW 's energy market was fully deregulated. This meant that, for the first time, consumers could change to the provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following three distributors

  • Essential Energy
    Essential Energy supplies electricity regional and country NSW, and also in southern regional QLD.
  • Ausgrid
    Ausgrid's network supplies electricity throughout northern, eastern and inner metropolitan Sydney and in the Hunter region and Newcastle.
  • Endeavour Energy
    Endeavour Energy's network provides electricity to 2.4 million people in homes and businesses located in the Blue Mountains, Sydney's Greater West and the Southern Highlands.

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save on your bills

Here are some easily implemented ways for reducing your electricity consumption

  • Don't use your clothes dryer as frequently. Hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Dress for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (beanie, booties, warm socks, jumper).
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air entering or escaping via gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Minimise lighting through the use of as much natural light as possible.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so you only cool or heat a smaller area.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and you've chosen to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider provides you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply the electricity to your premises if you change over to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the switchover won't take place until after your old provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and will tell the current provider that you're moving to another provider. The changeover to the new provider will not happen immediately, though, because the current provider has to do one final meter reading. and then issue you a final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor that supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
