Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in another state.
Another stage, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate greater competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities
- Energy
Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers Retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. The states have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2008 , the electricity market in Victoria was completely deregulated. This meant that consumers could, for the first time, switch to whichever provider had cheaper electricity prices.

Tips to reduce energy usage to save money
Here is a list of easily implemented ways to reduce household expenditure on energy
- Reduce usage of your clothes dryer. Hang the clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Rather than turn on the heater, wear warmer clothing (booties, jumper, beanie, warm socks).
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Turn off all your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Close doors of rooms that you aren't using, so that you just cool or heat a smaller area.
- Stop the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
- Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night to let the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
- Reduce the use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace old lights with more efficient LED lights.
