Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in NSW

Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in another state.

Another stage, which occurred earlier in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate a greater amount of competition the energy market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors are responsible for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2014 , the NSW market was completely deregulated. This enabled consumers to switch to whichever provider had cheaper prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following three distributors

  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid supplies electricity throughout northern, eastern and inner metropolitan Sydney and north to Newcastle and the Hunter region.
  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy provides electricity to 2.4 million people in homes and businesses across the Blue Mountains, Sydney's Greater West and the Southern Highlands.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy supplies electricity regional and country NSW, as well as throughout southern regional QLD.

Lower your power bills with these electricity -saving tips

Here are some easily implemented tips to reduce your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise usage of the clothes dryer. Dry the clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (jumper, booties, beanie, warm socks).
  • Turn all appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Close doors of rooms that you don't use, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night to allow the cool air in, then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Reduce the use of lights. Rely on natural light if possible.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating rooms by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms where the sun shines in.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have chosen to change electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and stay with your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor continues to supply electricity to your premises if you switch to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor at wholesale rates, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be sure that you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the final switchover can't take place until your old provider has sent you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and will also tell your current provider that you're leaving them. The switch to your new provider will not happen straight away, because the old provider will have to do a meter reading again, one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
