Electricity Market Competition in SA

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in another state.

The next step, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater amount of competition the energy market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Every state has between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The South Australia market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This allowed consumers to switch to the provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.

South Australia has just one main electricity distributor

  • SA Power Networks
SA Power Networks supplies electricity in South Australia
  • Note, electricity in a some remote areas of SA is distributed by other companies.

Reduce your energy bills with these energy -saving tips

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce your energy consumption

  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (jumper, warm socks, booties, beanie).
  • Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening windows at night to allow the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have made the decision that you'd like to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new energy provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and stay with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor continues to supply energy to your house even when you switch to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor at wholesale prices, then resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from your distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your energy supply because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the switchover cannot happen until your present provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and will inform your current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual transfer to the new provider will not happen immediately, because the old provider needs to do a meter reading again, one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
